Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 June 2007

Leave our park alone

• I WAS concerned to learn that ECI New Deal for Communities is going ahead with its planning application to level Radnor Street Gardens and destroy the beautiful trees and wildlife habitat.
I was particularly surprised as there was a consultation process and more than 100 people signed a petition which I and other residents from the Redbrick and Pleydell estates delivered to Liz Kessler, coordinator of public apaces, at ECI New Deal offices, stressing that they wished to retain the contoured landscape and mature shrubs and trees which make Radnor Street Gardens special.
Everyone supported improved resources for the Toffee Park play scheme but said that this should be achieved without destroying the natural beauty of the park.
Most of these changes are to provide additional play facilities, including a ball park for children. However, there are other people in the community who use and enjoy this space and yet no provisions are being made for them.
One parent told me: “In any case, not all children like ball games and those who do, can’t play ball all the time.” Many children enjoy the park as it is. They use the Toffee Park and swings.
Why change things? Why destroy what is good? What a waste of money! Think about the months of noise and dust and the loss of this green space when work is in progress.
Who needs a ball park anyway? Will it be a nuisance for residents who overlook the park?
Most residents who attended consultation events with architects Breeze felt they would appreciate a design that retained as much as possible of the mature trees and plants which make it an idyllic garden for all in the community to enjoy. I and all the people I have spoken to cannot see why it cannot be left as it is.
If you feel as strongly as I do, write to Rebecca Cresswell, of Radnor Street Gardens Steering Group, and Liz Kessler, EC1NDC public space coordinator at EC1 New Deal for Communities, 104-110 Goswell Road, London EC1V 7DH
