Arrogance of ‘listening’ Town Hall
• I AM becoming increasingly concerned at the apparent disregard for public opinion that Islington’s ruling Lib Dems currently display in a seemingly endless manner.
Not content with selling off housing, shops, property, schools and precious open space the Lib Dems are now planning to scrap Clerkenwell’s over-50s computer centre in St John Street.
This, of course, should come as no surprise as they have removed funding from so many other community schemes and worthwhile groups. However, and not wishing to sound too cynical, the Lib Dems can always find the money to award themselves bumper salaries.
The arrogance shown by this group of councillors appears to be growing at such an alarming rate that they cannot even respond to their constituents’ letters (Centre closure nears, June 15).
Yet in the council’s own “news” sheet, Lib Dem leader Councillor James Kempton states he is “listening” to the people of Islington.
Well, I sincerely hope Cllr Kempton takes notice of my objections and all other opposition to his administration’s policies and begins to respect the views of so many people in Islington. After all, showing total disregard for the people one purports to serve is neither liberal or democratic.

• FURTHER to my recent letter, two out of the eight councillors I approached, and the borough librarian, responded to my letter.
It is noticeable that both councillors (James Kempton and Jyoti Vaja) and borough librarian Rosemary Doyle failed to explain what they, personally, would be doing to ensure Islington Computer Skills Centre, based at Finsbury Library, remains open.
I am also most eager to hear from John Calcott, who according to Islington’s local government reference lists is the community access and partnerships manager, and therefore responsible for obtaining funding/grants. What is Mr Calcott doing to ensure the centre remains open?
Will Cllrs Kempton and Voja, Ms Doyle and Mr Calcott please let students at the centre know what (if any?) potential partner organisations are being approached for grant funding.
Students at the centre want to know their councillors and their local government officers, who are elected and employed to represent their interests, are taking action on their behalf. As things stand, we have doubts that any action is being taken.
