Passions roused by Art Deco doors
• RESIDENTS of Lorraine Mansions in Holloway are overwhelmingly opposed to the replacement of their Art Deco doors on the grounds that it will be unnecessary and expensive (‘Save our Art Deco oak doors from the skip’ plea, June 22).
Following the strength of feeling I saw at the meeting with Homes for Islington (HfI) on May 31, I and my fellow ward councillors, Barry Edwards and Paul Smith, along with Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South, canvassed opinions in the area on Sunday, June 17. We knocked on 112 doors, spoke to many residents and left card questionnaires for the residents we didn’t get to speak to.
The residents in the two earmarked blocks, and those living in other blocks (who will potentially be affected at a later date on the grounds of conformity) were largely opposed to the proposed new doors.
While increased security was an objective, it was felt by many people that replacing broken entry phones and reinforcing the existing doors and locks would be a better option – cheaper and a way to preserve the appearance of the doors as they are now.
Residents passionate about this issue have already highlighted that Lorraine Mansions is in a conservation area.
The Holloway councillors will robustly support residents in their ongoing negotiations with HfI over this issue.
