Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 June 2007

Church must show charity

• LAND around St Joseph’s Church, in Archway, is for sale at £3 million. Yes, that is the price the Passionists, according to Fr Nicholas, will receive after that beautiful area is butchered by the bulldozers.
The proposal is to build 49 dwellings, consisting of 18 houses for resident priests and their visitors plus five two-bedroom, four one-bedroom and 12 affordable dwellings.
What a great waste of this area. What about traffic congestion?
The car park will be gone, no drop-off points, no pick-up points, more pollution, more chaos on Highgate Hill and Dartmouth Park Hill.
What about the children who will be contained within this area? What about their safety and freedom from pollution?
And the users of the parish community centre? Where will they go? Surely there must be another way to raise the money.
What about English Heritage? What about the rich Catholics who live above the hill? Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor and the Catholic Church are not poor.
So come on all of you, and practise some Christian charity.
Come on you parents, teachers and residents. You who care about this area join with the action committee and make your voice count.
Protest to the council and the priests before it is too late.
