Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 June 2007

Why were coach protests ignored?

• AS someone who has always voted Lib Dem, I will re-think my choice come the next election, and urge other Lib Dem supporters to do likewise.
Following the east area committee’s decision to allow coaches bringing football supporters to the Emirates Stadium to park in nearby streets and at the Sobell Centre, I find Councillor James Kempton’s repeated claims that under his leadership the council is “listening to residents” are nothing but empty spin (Football coaches stay on streets, June 22).
The Lib Dems maintain there were “only” about 40 objections. But that’s 40 more than than the zero letters of support from residents.
Indeed, the only ones in attendance supporting Arsenal’s proposal were planning consultants from Arsenal’s agent Hepher Dixon and no less than Islington’s director of planning Graham Loveland (none of whom is known to live in the area).
Despite no support from residents for the Arsenal proposal, all three Lib Dem councillors voted to approve – with the Lib Dem chair’s casting vote seeing off the Green and Labour councillors who did listen carefully to residents. This display of political block voting – in what should be a non-political, quasi-judicial planning decision based on the results of consultation with residents – is a further disgrace.
Cllr Kempton’s charges may be “listening”, but most certainly not to residents.
