Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 15 June 2007

Aussie sprouts hard to swallow

I MIGHT be accused of being cynical, but I’ve just visited the Sainsbury’s store in Camden Town. After all the recent hype about the company helping to save the environment, and notices about the re-use of plastic bags, one might have thought the company was about to extend this kind of concern to what it sells.
Instead, I have just seen Australian-grown Brussels sprouts for sale at the store. Now I have always thought of sprouts as being a seasonal vegetable, not something we need to have flown in from the other side of the globe.
So is it any wonder that I view Sainsbury’s with cynicism? Its management should take note: the environment and global warming are not just another set of products from which to make a profit.
