Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 8 June 2007

Labour’s anti-war record

I WONDER who Sean Hills is going to vote for (Labour, the war party, June 1) ? The March 18, 2003 House of Commons vote that would have stopped the war was on an amendment moved by Chris Smith, the Labour MP for Islington South and Finsbury.
He was joined in an anti-war, cross-party coalition by Jeremy Corbyn, Labour MP for Islington North, 136 other Labour MPs, 53 Lib Dem MPs and 15 Tory MPs. Unfortunately, they were outvoted by another, pro-war, cross-party coalition.
When Chris stood down as an MP in 2005 Islington Labour chose Emily Thornberry as his replacement after she stood on an explicit anti-war platform.
A month earlier on February 16, 2003, nearly two million people demonstrated in London against the war. I was one of more than 100 Islington Labour members who proudly marched behind our banners that day. I saw a contingent from Islington Green Party there but did not see any other Islington parties present, although that does not mean they were not there.
Anyone can stand on the sidelines and criticise but the way to help our communities, Islington, London, the country and the world is to get involved. Come and join us.
CLLR BARRY EDWARDS
Labour, Holloway ward
