Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 May 2007

Where blame lies for shutting post offices

IN January, Labour MPs, including Emily Thornberry, voted in favour of the post office closure programme.
Last Thursday, the government announced that up to 2,500 sub-post offices are to close.
On Friday, Lib Dem MPs exposed further plans which put Crown offices across London, including Essex Road post office in Islington, at risk.
These changes are a direct result of Labour government policy, backed by Labour MPs. Yet Labour is trying to blame its Lib Dem rivals on Islington Council.
Why stop there? Soon Labour will blame the council for wet weather in May, the Italian baggage handlers’ strike and the UK’s Eurovision song contest result. Anything’s better than owning up to the fact that the government has got it wrong. No wonder people get cynical about politics.
Meanwhile, Liberal Democrats will continue to support residents and fight to save Essex Road post office.
On Monday we launched our petition demanding the Post Office keeps Essex Road open.
If you would like to sign the petition, you can contact us at islington_ld@cix.co.uk.
