Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 18 May 2007

At last, our jungle is tamed

• I WRITE to express my gratitude to the Tribune for, once again, assisting residents by highlighting our concerns and experiences under the council’s housing management company, Homes for Islington (Tenants say ‘It’s a jungle out there’, May 11).

I fully appreciate that, to some readers, failing to cut the grass may sound trivial in comparison with other important issues, but the £68,000 spent on improving our green space was money the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association raised from charities such as Help a London Child, Awards for All and Cripplegate Foundation.
For all their achievements to then be abandoned by all involved and left to rot is just one example of what is a serious social issue – the wastage from the public purse due to failure to manage and maintain the things we struggle so hard to improve.
There is one matter I’d like the opportunity to clarify. Many officers are involved in the day-to-day running of our estates. The officer mentioned in the article, Natasha Gerald, has been extremely professional and, in the email quoted, was simply relaying the information she had discovered, rather than being in any way culpable herself.
I have always found Ms Gerald to be courteous and professional, someone who works very hard to improve conditions on the estates she serves. There were other more senior members of her team who were included in the same trail, aware of the situation, and could have intervened weeks ago.
Nonetheless, I am delighted to report that the jungle was indeed tamed on Monday. It’s regrettable that we have to use valuable column inches in order to shame the powers that be to take the necessary action to resolve so many housing management problems.
Still, it’s another success for the Tribune. Thanks once again for providing the Islington community with an effective voice.
THOMAS COOPER
Vice-chairman, Lower Hilldrop Community Residents’ Association
