Protest cries May Day for Barts

MORE than two thousand protesters rallied at Clerkenwell Green on Tuesday for the annual May Day march.
Led by veteran campaigner and former MP Tony Benn, the anarchists, communists, trade unionists and peace activists wound their way from Finsbury to Trafalgar Square.
The causes ranged from anti-war to anti-seal clubbing, while large groups of Kurdish seperatists sought to highlight the plight of imprisoned dissidents.
Mr Benn said of the police presence: “The police always come and you’ve got to keep them happy. I’m waiting for them to privatise the police.”
Terry Hutt, 72, (above) a veteran of the Save Bart’s Campaign, said: “If we didn’t come together no one would listen to us.
“May Day is a tradition and I come here every year. The demonstration is at a good spot.
“Everybody knows this area. We’re also campaigning here to save Bart’s Hospital for five years now.”
