Aaron Nash |
Last farewell to boy who lit up everyone’s life
THEY listened to Amazing Grace before releasing 12 white doves at Arsenal- mad Aaron Nash’s final farewell on Tuesday.
More than 100 mourners gathered at the family home on the Mersey estate in Holloway before a horse-drawn hearse carried the coffin of the 10-year-old schoolboy past his beloved Arsenal’s Ashburton Grove stadium.
Aaron was found hanged in his bedroom three weeks ago in what is believed to be a tragic accident.
His last journey began at lunchtime as mourners followed the small, white coffin to East Finchley crematorium.
The service, attended by about 250 mourners, included hymns, a joint eulogy from the Nash family and the dramatic release of the doves.
Gunners goal ace Thierry Henry – an idol of the schoolboy, who wanted to be a striker – sent his condolences in a signed letter to the Nash family.
Aaron’s family wanted the wake, held at Central Library in Fieldway Crescent, Highbury, to be a celebration of his life.
Despite the sadness, the party reflected everything Aaron loved. Upbeat tunes boomed through the room while children bashed away at PlayStations, munched sweets and enjoyed traditional Caribbean food.
Aaron’s mother, Lilian, said: “I really wanted all the kids that knew Aaron to have fun. It was as if you could see Aaron running around the place. “The service was really overwhelming and the sympathy cards we have received have been out of this world.”
She added: “I really want to thank all our family and friends who helped with the preparation and the party. Without them, Steve and I would not have been able to manage.”
Aaron’s aunt, Ann Jordan, said: “He’d have liked the party, especially when people got up and started dancing. “He was an amazing nephew and will be greatly missed.”
His uncle, James Jordan, added: “Aaron just lit up everybody’s life. He’d play football and be friends with anyone, whatever their race or ability, because he had a real heart of gold and was just a fun-loving kid.”
In his letter to the Nash family, Thierry Henry said: “It was with great sadness we learned of the death of Aaron, and on behalf of all at Arsenal Football Club, I extend our sincere condolences.”
