Protesters say no to rocketing charges on the Town Hall steps

LEASEHOLDERS came out in force to picket councillors at the Town Hall last Tuesday night.
More than 150 crammed onto the steps and then into the main chamber for a full council meeting to protest at rocketing service charges.
They were addressed by a number of speakers, including Brian Potter, chairman of the Islington Leaseholders’ Forum.
The work on their homes is being undertaken to bring the borough’s stock up to the Government’s Decent Homes Standard.
Some are facing a service charge of £30,000 but the leaseholders claim housing bosses have for decades failed to undertake basic repairs. Television and radio crews from the BBC have even picked up on their story and interviewed the protesters outside the Town hall.
A group of protesters were also fighting the closure of two area housing offices, where those in council accommodation can get advice.
Several petitions were later handed to council leader James Kempton.
Mr Potter said: “It was nice to have so many people there who didn’t just sit indoors and worry.
“They made their voices heard. It was all worth while and we are very pleased but this is just the beginning.”
