Lib Dems approve further inflation-busting pay rise

FOR yet another year, Islington’s Liberal Democrats have awarded themselves an inflation-busting pay increase.
Last Thursday’s full council meeting saw them up their basic allowance to £9,964, an increase of £501 – or 5.5 per cent - from last year.
All 23 of the borough’s Labour councillors turned down their increases for the second year running.
Green councillor Katie Dawson said she was considering her position about the generous increase.
However, Councillor Dawson warned that a reasonable allowance was needed to stop Town Hall positions becoming the “preserve of stereotypical retired men”.
The pay hike for the Lib Dems means the party’s top earners who sit on its executive will each take home a £45,039 salary.
Councillor Terry Stacy, deputy Lib Dem leader, said the increases were in line with recommendations of London Councils, formerly the Association of London Government.
He added that Islington’s council tax payers get “good value for money” from the Town Hall’s top brass.
