Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 April 2007

World is not my Oyster

• IT has to be said that Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has done a great job in lowering travel fares and making London transport more accessible for young people with the introduction of the Oyster card. The student Oyster photocard gives a 30 per cent discount off the usual rate, which is great for those living and attending university and colleges here.

It’s not so great for me, however, as a student from London who goes to university in Leeds. I am not eligible for the student Oyster card as the Transport for London scheme only applies to students attending universities or colleges in the London area.
I still spend 22 weeks of the year here during my university vacation and I have to pay full fare every time I catch a bus or Tube. It is an important part of my course that I do placements, most of which are in London and unpaid.
I feel very strongly that the student Oyster photocard scheme should be extended so students who come from London can enjoy the same benefits as students who come to study in London for a mere 58 per cent of the year.
