Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 April 2007

We need People’s Olympics

THE Lib Dem strategy towards preparations for the Olympics in the borough has so far been notable in that there isn’t one.
Rather than take advantage of the numerous possible grants the Olympics offers to address Islington’s standing as one of the most unhealthy boroughs in London, this council has decided to just sit and watch from the, very close, sidelines and observe the multitude of benefits our neighbouring boroughs are gaining from the event.
At last week’s full council, it seems the Lib Dems finally agreed on how they want Islington to approach the Olympics: by writing letters to ministers asking them to confirm facts and figures that have been openly discussed in the press.
Alongside Labour councillors, I am sure residents have all breathed a sigh of relief that such an important event, loaded with heaps of potential to improve communities and individual lives alike, has not been completely wasted. Purposeless correspondence to the government at least saves Lib Dem leaders from having to engage with residents to imaginatively mark 2012.
In the meantime, Islington’s Labour group will continue to call for the council to hold a “People’s Olympics” every summer on estates around the borough, an event which, if council leaders support it, would show they are serious about improving the health of our borough.
CLLR CATHERINE WEST
Leader of the Labour group
Town Hall, N1
