Band’s instruments stolen
A ROCK band who had musical instruments stolen during a gig at the Carling Academy in Angel claim the theft was the work of a rogue fan.
Indie dance group Sol Devious realised they were missing several vital pieces of equipment after the gig last month at the venue in Parkfield Street.
Drummer Nick “Chuck” Swietlik lost kick pedals and other equipment, while session musician Dan Whiffin had two guitars taken, worth up to £1,000.
Band members say the instruments were taken by a fan who may have mistakenly believed he was part of the band.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was befriended by the group when he began “dancing like a maniac” while they played at the Barfly club in Camden six months ago.
But his antics wore thin when he began turning up to all of the band’s gigs and sharing the stage with them.
Lead guitarist Logan Coutts said: “He would turn up at all our gigs and jump up on stage with us. He would talk about ‘rehearsals’ as if he was one of the band.”
He added: “If he turns up at any more of our gigs we will definitely be asking the bouncers to chuck him out.”
Sol Devious, from Kentish Town, are an up-and-coming band on London’s music scene who describe themselves as a “powerful sexy rockin’ band”.
They have recently supported Brit Awards best newcomer The Twang, and are down to the final four bands in the Xfm Big Day Out competition.
Mr Coutts thought the fan, known as “voodoo man” because of the bag of dried corncobs and the elaborately decorated walking stick he carried around with him, might have taken the equipment because he thought he was helping out.
Police recovered the stolen property when they stopped a suspicious male urinating in Upper Street in the early hours of the morning.
