Estate playscheme starved of funding
• I READ that the Summer University starts this Easter for young people in Islington (Summer University starts this Easter, March 23).
This Labour-inspired idea began under the leadership of the Labour council in the 1990s and narrowly missed cuts to its programme when the Liberal Democrats came to power seven years ago.
However, this should not mask other cuts to holiday playschemes, such as the lack of council funding for Hornsey Lane estate playcentre, which provides play opportunities for children.
Local schemes need to be maintained because they provide for a wider age range of children and they suit parents who will often choose playschemes close to home, rather than centrally-run schemes.
Given that Islington has had a large chunk of government funding which is meant to be spent on children and young people, why not fund the Summer University and local playschemes such as the one on Hornsey Lane estate?
