Swift repair work
• YOU published a letter from a resident concerned about the state of the pavement outside the Town Hall (Is this our worst pavement? March 16). It was already being repaired before that letter was published. Work is now completed.
Islington Council is responsible for more than 260 kilometres of pavement and spends nearly £1 million on pavement repairs each year.
Some of the work is required because slabs are old, have settled over time or have been disturbed by tree roots. A significant amount is caused by motorists parking illegally on the pavement, cracking the slabs, which then subside.
Our street lighting programme is on target to replace nearly 10,000 lamp columns by 2008, making our pavements brighter and safer. And it’s not just pedestrians benefiting from pavement works. We’re helping wheelchair users by installing more dropped kerbs and putting in 500 new bike stands for cyclists over the next five years.
