Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 March 2007

Legal aid budget safeguarded

YOU give the entirely false impression that the government is reducing spending on legal aid (Greg in legal aid cut battle, March 23).
In fact, the government has committed to maintaining legal aid spending at about £2 billion a year until 2011.
About £400 million of this taxpayers’ money will be spent in London. In addition, the Legal Aid Minister, Vera Baird, has pledged that there will be no cuts whatsoever to the civil and family legal aid budget.
The changes being made to the way we at the Legal Services Commission deliver legal aid are designed to make best use of the available money by focusing it resolutely on the people who most need our help – the clients.
We have to ensure that the service is sustainable for the future and that we can continue to improve access to justice for some of the most vulnerable members of society.
MARTIN SEEL
Regional director, London
Legal Services Commission
