Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 March 2007

Our lost green oasis

A YEAR ago, the several hundred residents with homes in Ebert Street, Amwell Street, Mylne Street and the south side of Claremont Square looked from the rear of their homes onto a peaceful green oasis – as they had for more than 100 years.
Then the bulldozers moved in and those hundreds of residents watched as high-rise rows of what are described as Gannon’s “desirable mews residences” were built. Now a row of garages is going up.
How can the council grant planning permission for this sort of in-filling? Is every patch of green going to be concreted without a thought for the quality of environment?
Sometimes it has to be admitted that in a historic area the reality is no more new housing. Can someone tell me why this development has been allowed?
