Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 March 2007

I’m losing sleep over stadium

I LIVE in Battledean Road, overlooking Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, so I was pleased to read the article about its utter ostentatious waste of energy (Arsenal’s dazzling display keeps neighbours awake, March 9). But I will be very much surprised if anything changes for the better.
I had no problems with the amount of light they used during the building of the stadium. It was nothing compared to what is used now for no obvious reason.
Every night my bedroom is filled with light and it is difficult for me to go to sleep. I phoned Arsenal about it but they never returned my call.
I mentioned it during a meeting of Highbury Fields Association, of which I am a member, but nothing happened. I sent a photograph to councillor Laura Willoughby, but no response.
Then on the BBC World Service in February they had a one-hour, worldwide phone-in about light and noise pollution and I sent a photograph, which was posted on the BBC website. After reading the Tribune article, I wrote to councillor Katie Dawson, who has responded promptly.
There was also the unbearable noise of a helicopter for a whole hour before and after every game, but this is not so much the case any more.
Why does one have to put up with all this?
BERNARD VETTER
