Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 March 2007

Cross-border crimewatch

WHAT a very strange comment from Camden police that Islington councillors are supposedly “scared” about the repercussions of the dispersal zone which they are imposing on the Camden side of Tufnell Park (Estates fear trouble from over the border, March 9).
As someone who has been aware of the anti-social problems caused by youths in the Tufnell Park area since being elected in May last year, I would suggest that “concerned” would be a better description.
Many of the youths who cause the trouble there already cross the (invisible) border from Camden to Islington in Tufnell Park.
Residents, councillors and especially the police, in the form of our excellent Safer Neighbourhoods team, will continue to monitor the situation and take whatever steps are necessary to ensure there is no further displacement caused by the actions of Camden police.
Indeed, Junction Ward Safer Neighbourhoods team has had a partnership meeting with Camden police, where concerns were discussed.
I would like to reassure residents that I am certainly not “scared” by the Camden police action.
CLLR JANET BURGESS
Labour, Junction ward
Town Hall, N1
