Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 March 2007

We will fight this pub phone mast

COUNCILLORS Laura Willoughby, John Gilbert and I are as outraged as Zena Sullivan and her neighbours are about the mobile-phone mast on the roof of the Arsenal Tavern at the corner of Mountgrove Road and Blackstock Road, Highbury (Reckless to put up these masts, March 9).
I am sure she is aware the mast is not in Islington but in neighbouring Hackney, a borough whose record on consulting on issues on borough borders is abysmal.
If Ms Sullivan had spoken to us or any of her neighbours she would have known that we have been working with residents and Canning Road Residents’ Association in campaigning against this blatant abuse of planning regulations.
We have been busy knocking on doors with other residents collecting signatures on the petition, copies of which are also in shops, demanding that the mast be removed.
On top of that, we have delivered thousands of leaflets to residents urging them to join the campaign against the mast, and make their views known to Hackney Council.
We have taken the issue up with the Mayor of Hackney and will be joining residents in lobbying Hackney councillors at one of their meetings shortly.
If Ms Sullivan would like to suggest anything else we can do, we would be delighted to hear from her.
CLLR TERRY STACY
Lib Dem, deputy council leader
