TWO yoga enthusiasts stretched, contorted and sweated their way through a nine-hour marathon of the mystic Indian discipline on Tuesday.
David Marshalsea and Richard Caveney began their gruelling odyssey at 6.45am at the Bikram Yoga Centre in Vestry Street, off City Road, and finished at 9.15pm.
Bikram yoga is particularly taxing because it is practised in a room heated to 40 degrees centigrade, which helps the muscles relax.
The stretchy pair got through the day by taking regular breaks, keeping hydrated and taking in salt.
The idea was for them to do every single 90-minute class that day at the centre. Mr Marshalsea, 33, and Mr Caveney, 40, have raised around £3,000 for the Smile Train charity, which helps pay for operations for Third World children with cleft palettes.
Mr Marshalsea, who has been doing yoga for four years, said: “We managed to do all of the classes and didn’t miss a single posture.
“The hardest thing was when we got to the fifth class of the day because there were about 60 people, which made the room really humid.”
He added: “When we finished it was a fantastic sense of achievement. The first thing we did when we got out was head to the pub, which is terribly un-yogic.”
