Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 2 February 2007

Lock up your bike

• IN the financial year 2005-2006, 21,000 bikes were stolen in London. Residents of Islington were the worst affected, with 1,821 bikes stolen, a 119 per cent increase over the last five years.

Londoners are increasingly urged to ditch private transport in favour of bicycles and public transport. The council and the community should work together to provide more safe, well-lit bicycle lock-up areas like the one at Finsbury Park station’s redevelopment. I have seen individuals touting stolen bikes. To help stamp out this illegal trade, we should encourage people not to buy bicycles from sellers who cannot prove ownership.
DUNCAN WEBSTER
Deputy chairman, Islington Conservative Association
