THE daunting prospect of the first day back at school after a long summer holiday was eased by a colourful new addition at Brecknock School.

Returning pupils at the primary school in Cliff Villas, York Way,  were met by an orange and green playground, complete with slides, chalk-boards, and climbing equipment.

“It was an investment because they learn new words, skills and balance,” said headteacher Sue Ladipo. “It’s so brightly coloured, they don’t realise it’s learning, so really it’s a bit of a cunning plan.”

Brecknock pupil Owen Cotter, aged five, said: “I’m less scared here because it’s bright, and I can climb poles.”

And four-year-old Sahra Cusman added: “I feel so clever because I can climb on the ropes without holding anything, and I’m going to go home and tell my mummy that.”
