Pedestrian is killed after being hit by a minicab
A MAN died yesterday morning (Wednesday) after being hit by a minicab at a “confusing junction” in Camden Town.
Police were called to the junction of Kentish Town Road and Hawley Road at 6.50am following reports of an incident involving a Chrysler minicab and a pedestrian.
The man, who is in his 30s, was taken to hospital with multiple injuries but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Abdul Rahman, who lives opposite the junction in Kentish Town Road, said: “I didn’t see the crash but I heard it and went running out to find out what was happening.
“I think there are a lot of crashes and near-misses here. It is a confusing junction because there are four main roads coming off it and cars are coming from all sides. There are no pedestrian lights if you are crossing Camden Street.”
Shopkeepers in Kentish Town High Road said the scene had been cleared by the time they arrived at work and that the police cordon was removed by 9.30am.
In 2008, a cyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a truck at the same junction.
Cllr Paul Braithwaite, who is Camden’s Cycling Champion, said: “I don’t regard that junction as a particularly dangerous one for cyclists.”
He added: “It can be a problem if you are coming from Kentish Town and you want to get to Camden Lock – you have to cycle into the middle of the road.”
Police at the Collision Investigation Unit at Euston Traffic Garage said the light was green for the car as it went through the traffic lights.
Police are awaiting formal identification but are in the process of informing the man’s next of kin.
