MORE than 100 diverse artworks are for sale at the Albemarle Gallery to raise funds for charities hit hard by the recession.

A third of all sales will be donated by the Mayfair gallery to a charity of the purchaser’s choosing – and as an incentive many of the participating artists have lowered their normal selling prices.

Works range from £450 to £27,000 and artists include David Atkins, whose oil on canvas paintings depict street scenes in London and New York; Miriam Escofet, who is exhibiting surreal, still life paintings and Christopher Thompson, who paints atmospheric studies of moody men and mysterious women. There are also sea paintings by Japanese artist Hiromi Watanabe and giddy pastiches by Armenian “visual poet” Arshak Sarkissian.

London-born Peter Welford, whose multi-dimensional and psychologically intense works include Allegory, shown here, will also be exhibiting. Welford, who was born in 1964, worked as a lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art before spending eight years as an architectural historian and historic buildings consultant.

The artist’s imaginative oil and tempera on panel images are born out of a fusion of his expert knowledge of 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance painting techniques and an interest in symbols, dreams and the subconscious.

Through the collaboration the gallery and its artists hope to play a significant role in offering support to charitable causes amid the difficult economic climate.
