Education Feature – Celebration time at George Green's School

Sixth-form graduates’ results could be among international best

Published: August 18, 2011

ANTICIPATION gave way to celebration at George Green’s Sixth Form as the class of 2011 marked the completion of their studies at a graduation ceremony in the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.

Both A-level and IB Diploma Programme students attended with their family, friends and supporters. An evening of speeches and the presentation of certificates created great memories and hope for the future.

It was an evening for students to thank those who supported them in good times and bad, and to finally savour achievements won through hard work and determination.

Mrs Naughten (IB Director of Studies) assured parents that their children were a credit to them and urged them to continue giving their support so the Sixth Form graduation of 2011 would be the first of many celebrations.

She also described the changing profile of the Sixth Form at George Green’s with more students coming from schools outside the borough and from abroad with Russian, Italian, Nigerian, Irish, French, German and Bangladeshi students.

She joked: “Today at George Green’s Sixth Form we have not only come south of the river and off the island, we have gone international.”

This year’s IB Diploma Programme 2011 results were world class – 100 per cent of the 2009 Year 11 entered for the International Baccalaureate achieved the full Diploma.

Although the global statistics are not yet available, with a pass rate at Higher Level for all subjects of 90 per cent, and for Standard Level 78 per cent, George Green’s Sixth Form results are expected to compare well with, or perhaps exceed, worldwide averages. Performance at the top grades improved remarkably with 22% per cent of entries achieving a grade 6 or 7 (equivalent of A or A*).

The Diploma Programme is not all about students who study all six subjects. The school is also very proud of their certificate candidates, one of whom achieved a Grade 5 in her studies of World Literature at Higher Level.

Mrs Naughten describes this exceptional group of young people as:

  • Communicators: because they are young people who just tell it as it is.
  • Thinkers: who chose a programme of study that would prepare them for the outside world, whether for employment or university.
  • Risk-takers: because some students decided to move from their friends and fellow students pre-16 to assure their success in their sixth-form studies and undertook a broad programme of study.
