Education Feature: Birkbeck University of London tops national polls for student satisfaction and teaching

THIS year’s National Student Survey results show that Birkbeck, University of London has the most satisfied students in the capital.

The College was voted number one for quality of teaching and also came in joint first for overall student satisfaction.

Ranked among the top 200 universities in the world, Birkbeck is a research-intensive institution specialising in the provision of evening higher education, where the majority of students combine their studies with full-time work or family commitments.

Birkbeck student Miriam Zinga explains: “At Birkbeck, the lecturers were flexible and open-minded and gave equal worth to every student. The central location, small groups and quality of teaching made Birkbeck a very positive experience for me.”

Tricia King, is Pro Vice Master for Student Experience at Birkbeck and she puts the College’s top scores down to understanding the needs of busy, working Londoners.

She says: “We are delighted that our students continue to rate us so highly.

In the end, it’s what they think that really matters. 

Over 90 per cent of Birkbeck academics are actively researching in their field, which translates into fresh and exciting teaching material for their students.

“Our student body is unique and we educate a community of learners as diverse as the capital city population. All of our staff really understand the needs of students juggling work and families alongside evening study.”

Birkbeck offers over 70 part-time undergraduate degrees which are designed to be completed in four years, studying two to three evenings a week.

A number of undergraduate degree programmes can also be completed in three years by evening study.

The College also offers over 90 Certificates in Higher Education, which offer people without traditional qualifications, or who have not studied for some time, a route back into education.
