Education Feature: Courses at Regent’s College London

Published: 8 September, 2011

STUDYING psychotherapy and counselling is a challenging and rewarding experience.

At the School of Psychotherapy & Counselling Psychology (SPCP) it is possible to enter the programme as a complete beginner, and continue, subject to satisfactory interview at points of progression, all the way to professional qualification and PhD level.

You will not suddenly discover that you need to find another training institution to complete your qualifications.

The School’s Foundation Courses in Psychotherapy & Counselling provide a basic training and a solid grounding in psychotherapy and counselling theory and skills.

Unlike other introductory programmes, these courses are not geared to one particular approach: the courses cover existential, psychodynamic and humanistic/integrative perspectives.

As well as exploring the main therapeutic theories, the courses include philosophical and spiritual perspectives, cross-cultural approaches, and introduce students to the practical and ethical issues of working with clients in a variety of situations.

Students develop their capacity to reflect on their own interpersonal and emotional processes, patterns and experiences in order to help others do the same, and develop their competence in the use of essential communication and counselling skills.

The courses combine theoretical and experiential components, with skills practice sessions and self-development group work.

As well as providing a solid background for those wishing to apply for further professional training, they also offer those who already work in the helping professions the opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills.

Modules include an overview of humanistic therapy; introduction to Gestalt Therapy; fundamentals of phenomenology; society, biology and reality; consciousness and unconsciousness; and working with loss and bereavement.

The courses take one year to complete; students study one four-hour class per week and can choose from Monday morning classes, Monday evening classes and Saturday morning classes.

SPCP is a constituent school of Regent’s College London, the largest college of private higher education in the UK.

Its beautiful central London campus is located on the Inner Circle in Regent’s Park, a short walk from Baker Street station.

The School is now accepting applications for September/October start dates.

Potential applicants are encouraged to come along to an informal advisory meeting (one hour, held on a weeknight), during which they can meet in person with the Course Leader.

For additional information, to sign up for one of the meetings, or to make an application, please contact spcp@regents.ac.uk or call 0207 487 7505.
