Education Feature: Forest Preparatory School - Nurtured from acorns to mighty oaks

Published: 19 September, 2011

FOREST School was founded in 1834 as a  traditional boys’ boarding school with just 22 pupils.

This September,  48 additional pupils will be joining its very successful and popular Pre-Prep.

Doubling the size of the School’s Pre-Prep is a memorable way in which to mark the  department’s 10th anniversary.

Small classes of 16, focusing on every child as a unique individual, and high quality pastoral care will now be available for 96 pupils.

Elizabeth Garner, Head of the Preparatory School, said: “There is no better way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our very successful Pre-Prep than by doubling its size.

“A new playground, new classrooms and an expanded staff are ready and waiting to welcome the pupils at the start of the new school year.

“The pupils will be eager to welcome both current and prospective parents on Open Day and at forthcoming events.”

Pupils, who join aged 4, are educated on site right through to age 18.

The School operates in three distinct sections based on a diamond structure; a system whereby pupils are taught together in the Pre-Prep, then in single-sex classes from 7 through to 16, and then  reunited in sixth form.

All Forest pupils have access to the extensive range of specialist facilities on the school’s site.

The Pre-Prep pupils swim weekly in one of the two swimming pools and are joined by subject specialists for drama, music and PE lessons.

A Welcome Afternoon prior to joining the Pre-Prep helps families prepare for the “big step” into full-time schooling.

Parents are actively encouraged to be involved in their child’s school life, and the school aims to make parents’ working lives more manageable by providing both before and after school care.

At the start of the new school year Forest School will be welcoming a new Head of Pre-Prep, Paul McIntosh.

Mr McIntosh, originally from Northern Ireland, who is married with two children, will be joining Forest School from a teaching position at Harrow International School, Bangkok.

• Forest School is holding an Open Day on Saturday 24th September at 9.30am. This will provide families with information about life at Forest School’s Pre-Prep and the assessment procedure.
