JAZZ is back at Lauderdale House, Highgate, for the spring and summer season. Lea DeLaria, one of the more astonishing singers in jazz today, is opening the season next Thursday evening with a session that’s like to be highly entertaining. She performs in stand-up and TV comedy. But she’s a singer who is funny rather than a comic who sings.

Two weeks later, on May 19, there’s a strong double-bill.

Jim Hart will be playing on vibes with Michael Janisch on double bass and, secondly, pianist Gareth Williams will be previewing his new album based on themes of 20th-century English composers, Britten, Tippett, Elgar, Walton and Ireland.

From May 26 onward, the jazz evenings will be Thursday evening each week through to July 7.

Pianist Kate Williams is playing original material and standards with her quintet, including flautist Gareth Lockrane and trumpeter Steve Fishwick, on May 26.

Jazz with Latin American and South African flavour is being played on June 2 by guitarist Deidre Cartwright’s Picnic, a group also comprising Annie Whitehead on trombone and Alison Rayner on double bass.

Then there’s trumpeter Damon Brown’s Killer Shrimp on June 16; the Leon Greening Trio on June 23; legendary tenor saxophonist Bobby Wellins with pianist Liam Noble on June 30; and soul/jazz singer Zena James on July 7.

The season ends with special gig on Tuesday, July 12, when popular jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth will be accompanied by Charlie Wood, a fine piano player from Texas now resident in London.
