EARLY music enthusiasts are in for busy times getting round to specialist concerts over the next few weeks.

The early music feast starts at Wigmore Hall on Monday, (February 14), when vocal ensemble Trio Mediaeval joins Norwegian trumpeter/singer Arve Henriksen to perform music dating back to 12th century Italian Laude and 13th century French Notre Dame repertoire.

The next day at Wigmore Hall (Tuesday, February 15), soprano Julia Doyle is joining the Retrospect Trio to perform Purcell sonatas and theatrical airs.

Later, on February 25, the Wigmore Hall is starting a series of four Introduction to Baroque study sessions ,alongside concerts given by The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock and the Academy of Ancient Music.

But it’s not just the Wigmore Hall that’s into early music over the next few weeks.

At Lauderdale House on Tuesday, February 15, prize-winning band The Frolick will be seeking to show that baroque music doesn’t have to be taken seriously.

The band plays baroque music as it would have been played in a private home in Handel’s time but with a modern edge befitting a 21st century ensemble.

Contralto Emma Curtis started the band with lutenist Andrew Maginley to breath fresh live into the neglected entertainments of 17th and 18th century London.

Don’t forget, too, there’s a never ending flow of baroque music performed most night at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
