IT is the wedding season. But if you have an aversion to best-man speeches, present lists, small talk with ageing relatives and cheap fizzy wine, then never fear – you can still get into the swing of things at a poetry night this weekend.

Beat poet event The Book Club Boutique, famed in the Soho area for raucous spoken-word events, are taking over St Barnabas’s Church in Greek Street and Soho Square on Friday – and have a decided on a wedding theme for the evening’s performances. They even have a Reverend of dubious persuasion to conduct services if any guests decide to get hitched on the night.

Poets appearing this week include Melissa Mann, who runs indie poetry publishers Beat the Dust, and she is due to be joined at the pulpit by spoken-word performers Robert Auton, Stuart Evers, Tony White and Malcolm Bennett.

With the theme being all things wedding-oriented, the organisers have requested guests show up in their finery. “A ball and chain would do just as well,” says poet and compere, Salena Godden, who hosts the night and who’s Book Club Boutique band are also due to perform.

The Book Club Boutique Wedding is on tomorrow (Friday), 7.30pm at the House of St Barnabas, 1 Greek Street, W1, 020 7437 1894
