A YOUNG fisherman from Queen’s Crescent says he has been “crowned king of the Hampstead Heath” after snaring a monster carp believed to be the biggest ever dragged from the famous ponds,.

Rod ace Michael Fage, 22, snared the Mirror Carp on Saturday after luring it to the surface with pieces of crusty bread.

The former William Ellis pupil said it weighed 37lbs and the shock scales reading had stunned the close-knit fishing fraternity.

He said: “I’ve been fattening it up with bread for a while now and it’s been on my mind for a year or so. I just knew I was going to get him in the end.

“It was a nice feeling to finally have it in my hands. My dog Kano sniffed it a bit and then we threw it back in.”

According to New Journal records, the last time the elusive mirror carp – which gets fatter and fatter each year – was caught it was said to have weighed 33lbs.

The country’s heaviest ever carp, Benson, weighing 64lbs, died in 2009 after being poisoned in its lake.
