Spurs miss Mido edge

Premiership
Spurs 0, Aston Villa 0

IT was the perfect chance to cement fourth spot: with Arsenal and Liverpool both losing.

But for all their slick passing and attractive football, Spurs could not find a way through their guests’ stubborn rear guard action.
Missing Egyptian striker Mido to the African Nations tournament, coach Martin Jol opted to play Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe up front, a pairing he has voiced concern over in the past.
This forced the team to change tactics and offered a slick, ball-on-the-ground approach.
But when the chances came – and they did – Spurs found Villa keeper Thomas Sorensen in marvellous form.
Michael Carrick bossed the midfield, breaking up attacks and instigating them from his own half in front of Sven Goran Eriksson’s assistant Tord Grip.
One of many fine moments saw him loft a 40-yard ball into space for Teemu Tainio, but the Finn’s volley was tipped over by Sorensen.
A second-half pile driver from the edge of the box also forced Sorensen into a sprawling save but, Spurs had to settle for a point.
