Camden New Journal - Comment

Come clean on baths future

• One applauds Darren Johnson for wanting to save the Kentish Town Swimming Baths (Greens dive into the debate on the baths, Jan 19).
Personally I don’t give a damn whether we end up with the same swimming facilities at the Kentish Town Swimming Baths building or down the road at Talacre, just as long as residents don’t miss out. Nothing, but similar or better swimming pools will suffice.
For Councillor Phil Turner and his colleagues to win hearts and minds, however, they must be clear and upright about their intentions.
One moment they make an announcement that Talacre would be the ideal alternative site for the pools, yet days later they grant planning permission for what Cllr Gerry Harrison rightfully calls an “extremely suspect” application for 55 residential units on the Dalby site (at Talacre).
Camden should cut the claptrap and come out clean about what they will do to both at the Kentish Town Swimming Baths and at Talacre before the election.
Any other behaviour only raises suspicion that there is no plan for any swimming pools at all in that area.
Incidentally, Martin Smith’s query (Cabal of ten will destroy entire area, Jan 19) as to which councillor made the announcement that if Camden were running Hampstead Heath they would have closed down all swimming pools long ago, was Cllr John Thane.
