Camden New Journal - Comment

A great night at the theatre

• About 45 minutes every Thursday morning is given up weekly reading the CNJ.
Last week’s review section included an interesting book review by the ever readable Sunita Rappai and an enthusiastic review of August Strindberg’s ‘The Father’ at the Lion and Unicorn, which encouraged me to attend the performance that very evening.
The CNJ had quoted the theatre’s phone number and a recorded message gave ticket prices and performance times, but no indication where Lion and Unicorn was situated.
Out came the telephone book to find the address and then the A-Z revealed the street, off Kentish Town Road. A 20 minute bus ride on the 46 and a short walk to the pub/theatre followed.
One paid for the sheet of paper masquerading as a programme. Incorrectly calling the play ‘Father’, it also failed to indicate which actor was playing which role.
After these frustrations, the evening ended triumphantly – the performance was first-class. Provided he can also speak Swedish the actor playing Adolf should apply to the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm for a job.
