Brawlers not teachers
• THE sensationalist headline “Fired: Two teachers in party fight” on the front page of the New Journal was inaccurate and misleading.
A learning mentor is not a teacher and does not have to have the training or qualifications of one; it is a different role. Furthermore the status or job description of the other woman involved is not described at all except that she worked at the school; was she a “teacher” at all?
This inaccurate article gives the impression that teachers at Carlton Primary School were in a brawl. Although some ancillary staff in schools like to call themselves “teachers”, they are not. Anyone with a clean Criminal Records Bureau report can apply to be a teaching assistant whereas a teacher is a professional with a degree and teacher training.
A learning mentor who “helps pupils with aggression” and gets involved in a fight is not a positive role model to the children; she would have lost all credibility.
