The Freedom Pass is safe with us
• THERE is only one aspect of reaching the age of 60 that all Londoners truly appreciate and that is the Freedom Pass.
Two different and unrelated things are going on with it just now.
First, London Councils, a body representing all boroughs, agreed earlier this year to introduce a new five-year pass.
To that end all existing pass holders will receive in the coming weeks an invitation to fill in the form, provide a photo and prove residence to obtain a new five-year pass. This has absolutely nothing to do with the sinister second development. Minister of Transport Sadiq Khan recently announced he is considering reneging next year on the government’s three-year agreement.
It is now proposed to cut by half the government’s payment to London for 2010, reducing its contribution from £58million to £29million. If actioned this will leave London boroughs like Camden with a new hole to fill of at least an extra £1million at a time when we are pledged to a zero council tax rise.
Camden, along with London Councils, is seeking to resist the proposal.
Let me state clearly that there is absolutely no risk of withdrawal of the Freedom Pass by the Liberal Democrat-led administration in Camden.
