Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 November 2009

Debate on estate

• I WOULD like to address a number of issues raised by R Warren and Dr Peter Preston regarding Maiden Lane (Letters, November 12 ).
Camden Council is committed to working with the whole community at Maiden Lane to get people’s homes up to a decent standard and to get more facilities for everyone.
We are, as we have been for three years, continuing to work with residents on the different options available. Building new homes, which could initially be offered to residents, is one of these options. We must look at doing this in Camden where there is such high demand for housing. This would both generate new investment and meet future housing needs at Maiden Lane and across Camden. Let’s be clear – building new homes can happen without any demolition whatsoever and there has been no decision of any kind on demolition of homes. We will continue to consult extensively with residents on how best to generate the funds we need to improve the estate.
It is important that the views of all residents are heard and Open Communities are working on the estate to do just that.
They do not have any orders to “get anybody off” the estate. Open Communities have been listening to residents and collecting views over the last few months through a series of exhibitions and workshops. They are currently undertaking a test of opinion survey by going to door to door talking to residents.
In this way we will be able to gauge the strength of opinion and this will be a major factor in how we proceed. The authors of these letters are, of course, entitled to record their views and take part in the survey.
Cllr Chris Naylor
Executive Member for Homes and Housing Strategy
