Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 November 2009

Viva the Big Picture

• MANY thanks for your Big Picture feature, which attractively makes the point of the New Journal’s devotion to the arts.
However, this week’s text was a bit off; you credit the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata with having said: “It is better to die on one’s feet than to live on one’s knees.” This was in fact said by the Spanish Civil War heroine Dolores Ibarurri, better known as La Pasionara, of whom Ernest Hemingway wrote in For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Rhoda Koenig
Roderick Road, NW3

The editor writes: Dolores Ibarurri did indeed use these words frequently, but I understand they were first coined by Zapata a couple of decades earlier.

Send your letters to: The Letters Editor, Camden New Journal, 40 Camden Road, London, NW1 9DR or email to letters@thecnj.co.uk. The deadline for letters is midday Tuesday.
