7/7 bombings nurse was found dead in his flat
A FORMER St John’s Ambulance Service nurse who helped victims of the 7/7 bombings died alone in his Kentish Town flat, an inquest heard.
Geoffrey Clark, whose tireless volunteering also saw him treat patients during the King’s Cross fire in 1987, was found dead in his Oseney Crescent flat on August 17.
St Pancras Coroner’s Court heard on Thursday that the 58-year-old had been dead for at least four days when his body was found, making a toxicology report impossible.
Large amounts of medication were found in Mr Clark’s bedside table but there was no evidence he had taken an overdose.
Coroner Andrew Reid ruled on the “balance of probabilities” that he died of natural causes.
Family members said Mr Clark had become depressed and dependent on alcohol following a fall in 2004, which forced him to retire from his position as a nurse at Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel due to limited mobility.
At the time of his death he was known to mental health services in Camden.
His sister Shirley Yoxen said of his experiences at the King’s Cross fire and after 7/7: “He gave so much care. He was with a lot of people when they went, and held their hands at the end. It’s such a shame no one was with him at the end.”
Mr Clark is survived by four sisters and two brothers. |
