Who rules in borough?
• WHO rules Camden?
I was surprised to receive a letter from the Holborn and St Pancras Conservative Association which refers to Labour’s “embarrassing record of 40 years failure in Camden”.
It has apparently been distributed throughout the Regent’s Park estate.
I readily accept that Camden Council was controlled by the Labour Party between 1971 and 2006, but who has been ruling and abusing Camden for the last four years?
Have we not been ruled by a tawdry Conservative/Liberal coalition?
Has it really been a Labour council which has upped charges for the most vulnerable, decimated the voluntary sector, and embarked upon a massive sale of council housing at a time when the housing waiting list has soared to 17,000?
Is it Labour who have betrayed their values which had made Camden such a vibrant borough in which to live?
I know that the Holborn and St Pancras Conservative Association are embarrassed by their Liberal Democratic coalition partners at the Town Hall.
Indeed, I know that the embarrassment is mutual. But does this manic political disorder really explain this collective amnesia about who is now running the council?
I also know that George Lee, their parliamentary candidate, is a former policeman. But does he really believe in “verballing” Camden?
Finally, I know that we can expect a dirty election next May. But let’s at least have some regard for the truth. Let’s also recognise the Tories remain the “nasty” party who will do anything to gain political power.
