Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 12 November 2009

Let down by the system in search for a nursery place

• It’s NOT Fair!!!
It’s very unclear as to why some children get a place in a state nursery and others do not.
As a parent you apply months before the deadline and wait months for the answer only to be disappointed.
So should you apply as soon as your child is born?
What happens if you move to another borough?

Dear …
Thank you for your application…
unfortunately your child has not been successful in gaining a place at our nursery.

The first letter you open is a refusal, you say you have a chance with another nursery.
The second letter comes in and it’s like a massive punch in the face.
You start to dread the post. It’s like opening examination results you get the feeling of having butterflies in your stomach.
Is it just me that feels let down by the system?
So you start to feel that there is no other option and start to apply to private nurseries only to know that their prices can be as high as one month’s rent.
For a single parent this can be impossible.
What shall we do?
We want to go back to work, we want to get our lives back on track.
But it feels that the doors are closed in our faces.
I know some of you are saying the child tax will pay sometimes between 75 per cent and 80 per cent of private nursery cost. But who will pay the rest?
It’s the parent, but what if they are on a low income? What do they do?
I personally think that the local authority should pay the rest. They need to re-evaluate where they spend their money. After all it is education that empowers our children.
“Education is the transmission of civilisation,” (Ariel and Will Durant).
