Estate’s showcase day
RESIDENTS of the Regent’s Park estate may have thought they had walked onto the set of Britain’s Got Talent on Friday, when young people were invited to showcase their performance skills.
Young singers, rappers and dancers auditioned to take part in a one-off talent show organised by youth charity XLP, who work with young people on estates across the capital.
Staff from XLP took them on a tour of their double-decker bus, which has computers for homework and a “chill-out” area. The bus will be visiting Regent’s Park every Friday along with a mobile recording studio to give youngsters a chance to develop their talents, following a request from the Regent’s Park Safer Neighbourhood team. PC Helen Kirby, who spearheaded the project, said: “Historically, this estate has been bad for youth disorder and we want to give the young people in this estate something positive to focus on.”
Performer Billy “Multi” Merlos, of Robert Street, said: “This is the first time that there has been anything like this in this area. Camden’s got a lot of talent that needs to be heard.” |
