Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 5 November 2009

An offer too far

• FURTHER to your Comment (Our politicians have become consultantaholics, October 29) I recently received a circular from the council notifying me of a forthcoming satisfaction survey to be conducted by the National Federation of Housing.
It contained an added incentive, the chance to win one of five £50 high street shopping vouchers. Yes, like one of those junk mail prize draws, which I found both patronising and offensive.
They waste our limited resources in these financially straitened times sending out cars telling us of yet another survey, which, in itself will waste yet further money as its findings will be ignored and never implemented.
Could this latest survey be yet another electioneering ploy to woo voters for next year’s council elections? If so, it will fail to obscure the abysmal record of the Tory/Lib Dem coalition to date – that is in selling off council housing and reducing resources for youth and caretaking services.
The Labour administration had its faults, which is why it was voted out of office, but it largely resisted such draconian measures. More importantly, under Labour control, basic street maintenance was never neglected or axed but regarded as an essential priority. Under the Tory/Lib Dems, now simply walking down Camden High Street can be a hazardous affair, with tilting flagstones, stinking rubbish bins and rank pavements. .
High Street shopping vouchers for people living in sub-standard and sometimes appalling housing in the 21st century? No thanks.
