Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 5 November 2009

Once again, peace and safety on the Heath is under threat

• IN 2006/2008, Heath for Feet helped fight a successful campaign to prevent the expansion of shared paths on the Heath.
But once again, the safety and peace of Hampstead Heath is threatened by the plans of Transport for London who seem oblivious of its rural, unspoilt nature; unaware that, uniquely in London, everybody, including the elderly and very young, can enjoy an urban version of countryside without danger from cars or bicycles.
We would like to make readers aware of the Central Greenways Network Investigation – Consultation Document September 2009, commissioned from Sustrans by TfL. (See: www.sustrans.org.uk/assets/files/london/0909_C_Consultation_FINAL_Web.pdf).
The aim of this document is to identify “Greenways corridors” across a number of areas in north London, including the Heath.
For those of us concerned with preserving the Heath from encroaching cyclists and cycle paths the document gives considerable cause for concern. Largely ignoring pedestrian interests, it concentrates almost entirely on facilitating cycling on proposed “network routes” across the Heath. More ‘shared paths’ means encroachment on people’s safety and freedom from traffic, and an insidious carving up of a precious and beautiful piece of countryside.
Heath For Feet urge everyone who cares for the Heath, to download the Central Greenways document and send in a response to Sustran by Monday November 9.
