‘Noisy’ pub must shut at midnight
A TRADITIONAL pub which had a dramatic makeover into a celebrity bar frequented by the likes of Paul Weller and Pete Doherty has been forced to cut its opening hours after noise complaints.
Landlord Frank Carty was warned by councillors that he had failed to reach a compromise with neighbours and was ordered to close the Prince of Wales pub, in Kentish Town, earlier at weekends. The bar must now finish up at midnight, instead of 1am, on Fridays and Saturdays. It has also been ordered to install soundproofing.
Mr Carty blamed managers who had run the Prince of Wales Road bar while he was ill, but maintained the pub had been the victim of a hate campaign.
Neighbours made 80 complaints to the council about noise over the last year.
Mr Carty, who has run the pub for 16 years, said he had been in a coma for three months earlier this year and unable to intervene to deal with complaints. He said: “I rented the pub out. It had new management. They’re now gone and I’m back in charge.”
Ben Hughes, who has a four-month-old baby and lives nearby, claimed he was not allowed entry when he complained about noise. “I asked them to turn the music down but there are private parties so I wasn’t allowed in,” he said.
Mr Carty said he would have to lay off staff to pay for soundproofing. |
